Threats to the Underwater Cultural Heritage

With the increase of interest in underwater cultural heritage over the past decades, it is necessary to not only focus on excavation and exploitation of resources, but also on protection and preservation.

Underwater cultural heritage is one of the most seriously endangered types of heritage. 

It is important to raise worldwide awareness of the value of sunken cultural heritage, and to engage decision makers in taking steps to protect these cultural treasures from imminent threats such as pillaging, commercial exploitation, or construction.
