The Director-General of UNESCO convenes an ordinary session of the Meeting of States Parties at least once every two years. At the request of a majority of States Parties, an additional extra-ordinary Meeting of States Parties will be convened.

• The first session of the Meeting of States Parties to the 2001 Convention took place shortly after its entry into force (2 January 2009) in Paris on 26 and 27 March 2009. 
  
  
• The second session of the Meeting of States Parties took place in Paris on 1 and 2 December 2009.
  
  
• The third session of the Meeting of States Parties took place in Paris on 13 and 14 April 2011.
  
  
• The fourth session of the Meeting of States Parties took place in Paris on 28 and 29 May 2013, preceded by an Exchange Day on 27 May 2013.
  
  
• The fifth session of the Meeting of States Parties  took place in Paris on 28 and 29 April 2015, preceded by an Exchange Day on 27 April 2015.
  
  
• The sixth session of the Meeting of States Parties took place in Paris on 30 and 31 May 2017, preceded by an Exchange Day on 29 May 2017.
  
  

• The seventh session of the Meeting of States Parties took place in Paris on 20 and 21 June 2019, preceded by a High-level International Conference in Brest on 17, 18 and 19 June 2019.
