In December 2019, the Global University Network for Innovation (GUNI)
[1] published
Synergies between Science, Technology, and Humanities[2] report which provides most novel and relevant research within the sciences, technology, and humanities. The goal of the report is to provide a clear perspective on current global challenges and possible solutions to inspire the higher education community and beyond to chart a path that promotes the intersection and interdependence between various fields of study.
The report highlights why Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) need to engage with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and demonstrates practical ways in which HEIs can integrate the SDGs into their core functions of teaching and research. For example the report explores issues such as: research on water in Africa; learning and teaching mathematics to children from low-income households in rural Durban; Making Indian cities inclusive and inhabitable in partnership with local stakeholders; and creating dignified employment for poor communities in Sardinia, Italy. (GUNI, 2019, p. 466)
The report encourages HEIs worldwide to integrate the SGDs into their core curricula across all disciplines by creating new courses, developing valuable new competencies that are relevant to today’s society, and encouraging further innovative research opportunities.
