COVID-19 is not just a health issue, it has also generated a wave of hate speech across the world – further exacerbating antisemitism, Islamophobia, xenophobia, racism and discrimination.

UNESCO and the United Nations Office on the Prevention of Genocide and the Responsibility to Protect (OSAPG) are bringing together the world's top experts engaged in the fields of addressing and countering hate speech, education and the promotion of freedom of expression and opinion, including youth representatives for an Expert Virtual Meeting on the role of education as a preventive tool.

The (closed) meeting will review existing evidence on addressing and countering hate speech, exchange good practice and develop a strategy to mobilize and strengthen Member States' capacity to address and counter hate speech, off and online through education.

The meeting is part of the preparation for a ‘Global Education Ministers Conference and Multi-stakeholder Forum on addressing and countering hate speech through education’ (date and venue to be confirmed).
