UNESCO signs UN Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact

24/04/2018

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, today signed the Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact during a meeting with the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, Vladimir Voronkov.

An initiative of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, this Pact aims to strengthen the work of the United Nations in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, through effective coordination and coherence between the various UN agencies, to better serve Member States.

This Global Compact is built on the political commitment of the heads of UN agencies to strengthen monitoring and evaluation mechanisms and mobilize common resources. It is part of the Global Counterterrorism Strategy adopted in July 2016 by the United Nations General Assembly and the Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism presented in January 2016.

The Pact brings together the leaders of 36 UN agencies, Interpol and the World Customs Organization.
