Video Mapping Performance at the 2005 Convention’s 10th Intergovernmental Committee

The 10th Ordinary Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (UNESCO, 12-15 December 2016) will be inaugurated on 13 December 2016 at 17:00, with an exceptional digital installation by Senegalese artists Djiby Ba, Seydou Keita, Lamine Dieme and Essi Atiase, and DJ Ibaaku.

The installation will be inaugurated in the presence of Mrs. Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, Mrs. Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Mr. Yaya Abdoul Kane, Senegal’s Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, the International Organization of La Francophonie and various artists.

This video mapping installation, entitled Leral Thiossane, was created specifically for this occasion and was conceived by Marion Louisgrand Sylla, the director of Kër Thiossane, a centre dedicated to the digital arts in Dakar (Senegal). In 2011, Kër Thiossane received support from the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD). Fausto Morales, founder of slidemedia, also provided artistic and technical direction.

Leral Thiossane is an immersive video, light and sound installation. The artists have designed images, based on patterns and textures from African iconography, in order to create frames and spatial forms that evoke new visions of space, using depth and 3D effects. Leral Thiossanne remixes African iconographic representations with digital language and code.

The Leral Thiossanne exhibit, organized with the support of the International Organization of La Francophonie, will be presented in the UNESCO Foyer from 13 to 15 December 2016 and will mark the adoption of draft operational guidelines on the impact of digital environment on the diversity of cultural expressions by the Committee.

Event date:
13/12/2016 - 17:00
Location: 125, Avenue de Suffren., Foyer of room I. UNESCO House., Paris, 75007, France
