  1. Joint message on school health and nutrition in the context of the COVID-19 in Eastern and Southern Africa

In Eastern and Southern Africa, at least 120 million children and youth are not able to attend school due to COVID-19 related school closures. More than 16 million affected school-children in the region rely on school meals and nutrition services. This joint note provides key messages and guidelines for governments and WFP and UNICEF Country Offices to lead assessments, planning, implementation and system strengthening for risk-informed and resilient school health and nutrition programmes in response to COVID-19.

  2. Ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights: Measuring SDG target 5.6

The Sustainable Development Goals mark tremendous progress in addressing women’s sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights. For the first time, an international development framework includes not only targets on services (Targets 3.1 and 3.7), but also targets that address the barriers and human rightsbased dimensions (Target 5.6). Target 5.6 on universal access is measured by two indicators designed to complement each other (Indicators 5.6.1 and 5.6.2).

  3. A future for the world's children? A WHO-UNICEF-Lancet Commission

Despite dramatic improvements in survival, nutrition, and education over recent decades, today's children face an uncertain future. Climate change, ecological degradation, migrating populations, conflict, pervasive inequalities, and predatory commercial practices threaten the health and future of children in every country. In 2015, the world's countries agreed on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), yet nearly 5 years later, few countries have recorded much progress towards achieving them. …

  4. We've got the power: women, adolescent girls and the HIV response

This publication marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most comprehensive and progressive global policy road map for fulfilling the human rights of women and girls and achieving gender equality. Progress has been made in key areas, the report shows, however, that many of the promises made to improve the lives of women and girls around the world have not been kept. It points out how the HIV epidemic holds a mirror up to these inequalities and injustices, and how the gaps in rights and services for women and girls are exacerbating the epidemic. …

  5. "My teacher said I had a disease": barriers to the right to education for LGBT youth in Vietnam

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth in Vietnam face stigma and discrimination at home and at school. Many experience verbal harassment and bullying, which in some cases leads to physical violence. Teachers are often untrained and ill-equipped to handle cases of anti-LGBT discrimination. …

  6. Zero discrimination against women and girls: fact sheet

On Zero Discrimination Day and as part of the global movement for equality for women and girls, UNAIDS is highlighting seven areas where discrimination against women and girls persists, raising awareness and calling for change: 1) Equal participation in political life; 2) Human rights and laws that empower; 3) Economic justice - equal pay for equal work; 4) End gender-based violence; 5) Access to health care without stigma or barriers, including bodily autonomy and sexual and reproductive health and rights; 6) Equal and free access to primary and secondary education; 7) Climate justice.

  7. 25 years after Cairo: accelerating Africa's promise; fast-tracking progress in achieving good sexual reproductive health and rights outcomes and achievement of Sustainable Development Goals

This issue of the African Development Perspectives addresses sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in Africa, with the backdrop of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action (PoA), signed by 179 governments twenty-five years ago, in 1994, in Cairo, Egypt, and the Nairobi Summit in November 2019, where delegates will converge to reaffirm the commitments to accelerate the promises made at the 1994 Conference. …

  8. Regional report: sexual and reproductive health laws and policies in selected Arab countries

This report is an attempt to provide a bird’s eye view on the situation of legislative tools and frameworks in selected Arab countries with regard to key issues related to reproductive health. Legislative environment is an enabling factor that creates supportive space and mechanisms to effect systemic, societal and individual change. This regional analysis is a starting point that should be built on to develop in depth analyses on the national levels to identify gaps and propose bridging and corrective measures.

  9. I felt like the world was falling down on me. Adolescent girls’ sexual and reproductive health and rights in the Dominican Republic

Adolescent girls in the Dominican Republic are being denied their sexual and reproductive rights, including access to safe abortion. “I Felt Like the World Was Falling Down on Me” documents how authorities have stalled the rollout of a long-awaited sexuality education program, leaving hundreds of thousands of adolescent girls and boys without scientifically accurate information about their health. The country has the highest teen pregnancy rate in Latin America and the Caribbean, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). …

  10. Women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights in Europe

Despite considerable progress, women in Europe continue to face widespread denials and infringements of their sexual and reproductive health and rights. Laws, policies and practices still curtail and undermine women’s sexual and reproductive health, autonomy, dignity, and decision-making and pervasive gender inequality continues to have profound effects on their sexual and reproductive health and rights. Moreover, in recent years, resurgent threats to these rights have emerged jeopardising longstanding commitments to gender equality and women’s rights. …

  11. The revised international technical guidance on sexuality education - a powerful tool at an important crossroads for sexuality education

In January 2018, UNESCO, together with UNAIDS, UNFPA, UNICEF, UN Women, and the WHO, completed the substantial technical and political process of updating the International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education, thereby unifying a UN position on rationale, evidence, and guidance on designing and delivering comprehensive sexuality education (CSE).

  12. Global partnership for action to eliminate all forms of HIV-related stigma and discrimination

Without addressing HIV-related stigma and discrimination, the world will not achieve the goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. The global partnership’s goal is to reach zero HIV-related stigma and discrimination.
