This document offers a needs analysis of the opportunities in Europe to integrate quality criteria for antibullying policies in secondary schools and in quality frameworks for the education sector. This analysis was done in the context of the ABC-project (Anti-Bullying Certification, 2018-2020).
This publication is a collection of exemplary designs for group washing facilities. It is intended as an introduction to the topic and the concept of group handwashing, as well as the principles and the basic requirements for facilities. It is not a detailed step-by-step guide on how to plan or construct facilities. Rather it is intended as an inspiration and motivation for school communities to construct and use group washing facilities in schools and to present possible designs for different settings and contexts. …
This rapid review focuses on identifying evidence and lessons learned on the links between life skills interventions in emergency settings and the prevention of unwanted pregnancies and early marriage and return to education post crisis amongst adolescent girls. It seeks to enable learning from past emergencies to inform the design of effective support to adolescent girls throughout the COVID-19 crisis.
This rapid review explores the evidence and lessons learned about engaging girls in life skills interventions at a distance (i.e. through mobile, online, radio or other) both in emergency and nonemergency settings. The purpose of the review is to assist programmes in identifying relevant and effective ways to continue and build girls’ life skills remotely during the widespread school closures and quarantine of the COVID-19 crisis.
The pandemic is deeply affecting the environment in which girls and all children grow and develop. While children and young people’s health and mortality currently appears less impacted by Covid-19 than older adults, our experience shows that health crises such as this can disproportionately affect girls and all children in a number of ways. Their education will be interrupted, protective structures disrupted, and their families and communities placed under stress by health and economic burdens. …
In response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, 107 countries had implemented national school closures by March 18, 2020. It is unknown whether school measures are effective in coronavirus outbreaks (eg, due to severe acute respiratory syndrome [SARS], Middle East respiratory syndrome, or COVID-19). We undertook a systematic review by searching three electronic databases to identify what is known about the effectiveness of school closures and other school social distancing practices during coronavirus outbreaks. We included 16 of 616 identified articles. …
What evidence exist regarding efforts to mitigate the secondary impact of past disease outbreaks and associated response on the education sector?
USAID and other development practitioners and policymakers around globe are rapidly mobilizing to develop a coherent, multi-sector strategy for the COVID-19 response.
Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is preventable. Over the last two decades, VAWG prevention practitioners and researchers have been developing and testing interventions to stop violence from occurring, in addition to mitigating its consequences. This rigorous, in-depth review of the state of the field presents what is now known five years on after the UKAID-funded, What Works to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls (What Works) programme, a six year investment, in advancing our understanding of What Works within the context of the wider evidence base. …
The aim of this publication is to emphasize the importance of implementation of the comprehensive sexuality education in schools in the Republic of Croatia. While keeping in mind the deep division in the society that accompanies this topic, but also the rise of the conservative forces that are trying to promote personal and religious ideas, it is essential to provide education that will help the youth to make a responsible decision, but as well build the society of peace and tolerance. …
School feeding programmes are recognized as a key part of food assistance and relief in emergency and development programmes. They are principally concerned with transfer of food to school to alleviate hunger, meet daily consumption needs and encourage attendance and retention. Home-Grown School Feeding programmes (HGSF) in particular have received attention in recent years because of the links to agricultural development and have therefore been widely viewed as a means to address food insecurity while promoting rural development goals in Africa. …
School feeding is increasingly recognised as a major investment in both human capital and in local economies which has accelerated country-led demand. It is seen as playing an important role not only in emergency contexts but also in social stability, peace-building and national development. Re-imagining School Feeding calls for increased investment targeted at the ages of 5-21, where new evidence shows the maximum impact on developing human capital potential. …
The aim of this review was to present the recent evidence on the impact of early marriage and/or pregnancy on the rates of girl child drop out. It also synthesises evidence that focus on laws, policies and practices that force pregnant girls or new mothers out of school. Although early marriage and pregnancy are often linked to school dropout, evidence proving a direct and causal link is limited. This is because early marriage and pregnancy can be both the cause and consequence of dropping out of school. …
