Kick-off start of the project for achieving SGD4

Why this project?

In order to achieve the overarching Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) there is a need for change. It is especially important to explain the existing challenges to the young generation. The understanding of the issues will facilitate their thinking process on how to find possible solutions. In this regard, the information and communication technologies (ICT) may play significant role by broadening the knowledge about the current situation in the world. ICT can also provide tools to dealing with the problems.

Therefore, UNESCO IITE and Nisai Group selected 10 Russian schools to take part in the project “Transforming teaching and learning at schools for achieving SGD 4: turning theory into practice with ICT”. The goal of the joint project, given that, is to contribute to the promotion of the SDGs, disseminate best practices on ICT-enabled education, organize online group educational and project activities.

The first live session

On 19 June 2020 the live session with the selected Russian schools took place. During this session, the representatives of UNESCO IITE and Nisai Group provided the implementation plan to the schools. One of the core activities offered to them is a competition on the SDGs. That is to say, the students should give a presentation in English about a global issue, in line with the chosen SDG. In particular, they explain why education is important to tackling this issue and develop this idea for the future.

What is next?

As a result, students with the support of teachers are going to explore how different SDGs are present in everyday life.  Additionally, the winners of the competition will get a chance to learn more about the SDGs with the specially designed SDG course and the Units of Sound programme. The school teachers and coordinators, who took part in the live session, shared their experience on realizing global activities. They also expressed the opinions on how the current project can develop their and students’ potential and competencies.

Summing up, the project’s implementation takes few steps. Each of them is going to bring students and teachers closer to the better understanding of what SDGs are and what is lacking in order to achieve them by 2030.
