Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the conference being postponed?

The World Press Freedom Conference is being postponed for considerations linked to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus. The organizers of the conference are taking this decision to guarantee the health of everyone involved and ensure a high level of attendance and the quality of the programme.

Is the conference being postponed on health grounds?

The protocol for events of the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) provides sufficient grounds for the decision to cancel the event. Furthermore, the announcement by the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring COVID-19 a pandemic has further reinforced the conference organizers’ decision.

Why has the choice been made for 18 to 20 October?

The World Forum, which offers ideal facilities to organize such a large-scale event, is available on these dates. Furthermore, the new dates will allow the conference to be a joint celebration of World Press Freedom Day (3 May) and the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (2 November).

Why has the conference not just been cancelled?

This would have meant missing an opportunity to draw attention to the issue of press freedom. The World Press Freedom Conference is the largest global celebration of press freedom and has been organized by UNESCO in cooperation with Member States since 1993. Both, UNESCO and the Kingdom of the Netherlands want to make sure that this tradition and legacy continues.

What is the impact on the conference programme?

The conference organizers will work to retain the original programme, with only minor adaptations.

Who can I contact if I have questions?

You can get in touch with the liaison officer for your session or use the general email address wpfc2020@minbuza.nl.

I’ve already arranged travel and booked a hotel. Who will cover those costs now?

At this early stage, it should be possible for most travel and hotel reservations to be rescheduled. However, should any additional costs be incurred, the organisers of the WPFC will unfortunately be unable to provide compensation.
