    The Golden Age Clubs

NCJWA Vic offers a set of programs for seniors which encourages social interaction, improve health and provides inspiring experiences for older women and men. The programs are inclusive and offer a sense of community and family. The Golden Age Clubs are open to Holocaust survivors from the former Soviet Union living in social housing. Participants are offered exercise classes, discussion groups, visits to different places of interest and a way to connect with their Jewish heritage through celebration of festivals. The Golden Age Clubs take place now virtually, using telephone conferencing. The meetings are held in small groups and are facilitated by our program coordinator. The meetings include guest speakers, educational programs, and discussion groups. We have also introduced the initiative ‘NCJWA Vic Sessions’, for Seniors Program volunteers also offering group discussions and guest speakers via Zoom. NCJWA Vic has the ability to evolve as situation changes, we are constantly updating the ways in which we operate to meet the current needs of our community. We will keep supporting those who are in need, while adapting to the reality and identifying new opportunities to work within the current environment.

    The Jam Project

The Jam Project is a teenage - buddy program matching girls aged 14-16 years with a female 'buddy' aged 21-28, with the goal of promoting the empowerment of girls, while helping to build their own sense of self-worth, self-belief and autonomy. Ordinarily, this is achieved through secure and reliable fortnightly catch ups for up to a period of a year. In addition monthly group sessions bring the girls and buddies together for workshops and activities that enhance their mindset and promote their curiosity, resilience and autonomy. The girls and their buddies now catch up weekly on phone or Facetime and staff are in regular weekly contact with them. The program offers ad hoc activities for buddies and girls in Zoom while maintain the monthly group sessions. We also introduced a weekly newsletter for the Jam Family (girls, buddies and parents) which provides discussion topics and stay at home activities that the girls and buddies can share.

    Caring Mums

Caring Mums is a confidential, non- denominational program providing emotional support to mothers and pregnant women. It matches trained volunteers to new mums with the goal of developing secure trusting relationships. Through up to 12 months of regular weekly meetings, mums’ feelings of isolation, anxiety and depression decrease, while their parenting confidence, sense of belonging and connection grow significantly. In response to the COVID- 19, NCJWA Vic quickly adapted the program to operate in the on-line environment. Our priority was to keep offering our service as we understood the impact this reality could have on vulnerable and isolated populations. Face to Face weekly catch ups between the participant and her volunteer were replaced by Facetime calls, often accompanied by small acts of kindness such as a take away coffee left on the participant’s door step. Sometimes the volunteer accompanied the participant virtually (via Facetime) on a walk. Our Caring Mums team have maintained fortnightly supervision sessions for volunteers via zoom and are always available by phone. New intakes have continued with staff matching new mums to volunteers. We continue to train new volunteers to meet demand. All volunteers receive 20 hours of training. Usually this takes place over 5 weeks in a face to face setting. The most recent training was interrupted by the pandemic and quickly switched to an online platform. To counteract the enhanced isolation many of our participants were experiencing we introduced a new virtual mothers’ group ‘Caring Mums Together’. The group is facilitated by Michelle Kornberg (Caring Mums Coordinator, educator, family counsellor, parenting, relationships and grief specialist) and meets weekly. The group are in regular contact between sessions via WhatsApp. In addition, we have initiated a fortnightly Caring Mums newsletter for all Caring Mums stakeholders with interesting parenting articles, podcasts and Ted Talks.

    Arts Education

This is a document that collects a series of art education practices that have taken place in Portugal since the beginning of the lockdown. To celebrate the International Arts Education Week 2020, Arte Central launched this project called "Set of Art Education Practices: visual arts in pandemic times". We invited teachers from all levels of education to participate by sharing the activities they are working on with students. We received 30 generous contributions, here collected, but teachers continue to send us material, so that we might have to launch a second edition, with more activities. As a member of the International Society for Education Through Art (InSEA) and of the World Alliance for Arts Education (WAAE), Arte Central has decided to mark that special week by becoming an aggregating element, making the bridge between these teachers, sharing their practices, in order also to understand what is happening in Visual Arts in our formal education system.

International E-Seminar: An Interactive session on ResiliArt Movement

On the occasion of World Art Day, Club per l'Unesco Genova Città Metropolitana along with AIAP/IAA INDIA, official partner of UNESCO in India, under UNIVART Foundation had organised an e-seminar on the ResiliArt movement. In this time of crisis, when the world is suffering from economic and psychological trauma, art has become a primary source of solace. The health crisis brought on by the novel corona virus has plunged the global economy into a recession. Majority of UNESCO World Heritage properties have closed down, along with cultural institutions and museums. The artists are struggling to survive as their medium of income has been ‘locked down’. The e-seminar was held on 24th April 2020, representing countries such as Italy, Turkey, Germany and India. The event was inaugurated by Manaj Saha (President IAA INDIA, official partner of UNESCO) who began the discussion on ResiliArt with Massimo Ruggero (President of Club of UNESCO Genova). The chief speaker was Bedri Bakyam (President of IAA World, official partner of UNESCO) and his speech was followed by Eva Moll (Curator and Artist). The debate focused on the power of artistic expression and its value from a psychological point of view. Another ‘e-seminar’ was held on 26th April 2020 by AIAP/IAA INDIA, official partner of UNESCO in India, under UNIVART Foundation. The discussion took place between Mr. Manaj Saha, President of IAA INDIA, Official Partner of UNESCO and Mr. Amit Bhar, Vice President of IAA INDIA, Official Partner of UNESCO, along with Mr. Samir Sarkar, Eminent Artist and Art Activist and Dr.Neerja Chandna Peters, awardee of Wales Hartley.

    The Vrouw Maria

The Vrouw Maria (Lady Mary) was a 18th Century Dutch vessel that sank in Finnish waters on its way to Saint Petersburg, bearing a precious cargo destined for the Empress Catherine the Great of Russia. It represents a valuable piece of European underwater cultural heritage: thanks to digital technologies anyone can “visit” the shipwreck - and with no need to be a scuba diver. Researchers and students at the Department of Media (Media Lab Helsinki) in Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, have created an interactive, real-time, virtual reality simulation about the Vrouw Maria shipwreck.

Diaries in the Time of Pandemic 2020

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in March 2020, the Archives of Latvian Folklore of the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art (University of Latvia) and Punctum Magazine launched an initiative "Diaries in the Time of Pandemic 2020". The aim of the initiative is to identify and through diary entries document, how our society feels during the pandemic – in a situation where there is so much unknown and we are forced to isolate ourselves and spend more time in our homes than ever before. But above all, the project aims to create a sense of community, because although we are confined in our own four walls, we are all in this together. The initiative invites anyone to document their life during these uncertain times in Latvia and contribute to the collection "Diaries in the Time of Pandemic 2020". Diaries can be sent via email or tagged @autobiografijas.lv if posted on Facebook. All submitted diaries are published in the Digital Archives of Latvian Folklore. They can be submitted anonymously as well. The project is carried out in cooperation with Kroders.lv and UbiSunt.

Tour the wrecks of HMT Arfon, HMS/mA1, HMS Colossus, London, Coronation, Holland No.5, Invincible, Norman’s Bay, U8, Association, Bartholomew Ledges, Tearing Ledge, Wheel Wreck, Thorness Bay, and Rooswijk. Ships from different parts of the world, that have at different points in time sunk in English waters. These trails use new technologies such as multi-image photogrammetric recording and virtual reality techniques. The new techniques allow viewers to see a clear 3D image of a site. Not only do they bring maritime archaeology to life for the non-diver, they're a lot easier to interpret than more traditional geophysical survey techniques or photographs taken in poor visibility. They can even aid archaeologists' work on land by allowing measurements to be taken and analysis to be carried out post-dive.

    Ithra Connect

What is the Ithra Connect initiative? Time is everything. And we have had no time to waste in the launching of a new initiative by the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra). The new Ithra Connect initiative provides an online platform for transforming the hours of anticipation and waiting brought on by these exceptional circumstances with an outlet for productivity and self-development. The Ithra Connect initiative includes diverse interactive programs and educational media for all segments of society through Ithra’s website and social media outlets such as YouTube and Twitter via the #IthraConnect hashtag. The initiative presents knowledge and thought enrichment programs covering the five pillars on which Ithra stands – Creativity, Culture, Knowledge, Art and Community. Why did Ithra launch this initiative? Local and international health authorities agree that staying at home is the most effective approach to keeping families and society safe during our current situation. This has resulted in an abundance of free time for so many of our daily lives since schooling and work have largely ground to a halt. The Ithra Connect initiative is an extension of Ithra’s role in growing knowledge and inspiring new tracks of creativity through the latest teaching methods. The goal is to present exceptional cultural experiences through innovative approaches as part of its dedication to the community and in solidarity with the Kingdom’s efforts to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Through diversified content, Ithra Connect seeks to provide a rich experience for our community and reach new members. The initiative seeks to bridge the gap created by circumstance between Ithra’s offerings and our audience, visitors, participants and members. To achieve this, we are offering this collection of nine interactive programs to engage the interests of family members and each of their age groups.

Lancelot.education: online platform to support and encourage education in African French speaking countries

Reading has always been a way to stay educated and intellectually active for both adults and young people. Lancelot.education is an online platform created in the Arab Emirates for French-speaking countries in Africa which was created to encourage young people in their reading efforts. The principle is simple, a child reads a book and, on our platform, collects points by answering different questions about the book. By monitoring the number of points collected, parents and teachers can see if a child has understood what it has read and can adjust their teaching and supervision of their children accordingly. Lancelot.education is mainly an educational support tool for understanding books of the school curriculum in French African countries. Additionally, the platform also covers classic French literature books and books for young readers. Lancelot can also support students deprived of education during this difficult period of covid-19. Teachers can use Lancelot as a tool for better monitoring and testing the efforts of their students while at the same time, students feel encouraged in tracking their reading progress. www.lancelot.education

The Forgotten Wrecks Projec and the HMD John Mitchell

The HMD John Mitchell was an 85 foot (25 m) long steam drifter that sunk on the 14th November 1917 after colliding with SS Bjerka. Fortunately there was no loss of life when the wreck disappeared into the sea, approximately 15 miles from Swanage. The wreck of the John Mitchell was rediscovered by Dave Wendes, a local dive boat skipper and historian, after he was alerted by a local fisherman who caught his nets on the wreck. Today she lies at a depth of 40 m - inaccessible to most. With the generous funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Maritime Archaeology Trust has been able to research the wreck through our ongoing project, the Forgotten Wrecks of the First World War. Volunteer divers have collected information, video and images from the site, and artefacts recovered from the wreck have also been recorded. The Thistlegorm Project

The Thistlegorm Project aims to raise awareness of the rich underwater cultural heritage of the Red Sea. The project is a collaboration between the University of Nottingham, Ain Shams (Cairo) and Alexandria University, who are using 3D and virtual reality technologies to provide greater access to various submerged sites within the region. The SS Thistlegorm was chosen to represent the project due to its wide recognition within the diving community. By providing access to a site previously only accessible to divers; public awareness of underwater heritage in Egypt may be increased regionally and internationally; and further conservation and preservation of said heritage may be achieved.

    Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove

The dense forest of the Osun Sacred Grove, on the outskirts of the city of Osogbo, is one of the last remnants of primary high forest in southern Nigeria. Regarded as the abode of the goddess of fertility Osun, one of the pantheon of Yoruba gods, the landscape of the grove and its meandering river is dotted with sanctuaries and shrines, sculptures and art works in honour of Osun and other deities. The sacred grove, which is now seen as a symbol of identity for all Yoruba people, is probably the last in Yoruba culture. It testifies to the once widespread practice of establishing sacred groves outside all settlements. The grove covers an area of 75 hectares and it is a typical example of a true primary rainforest that is fast disappearing in the West African Sub-region and one of the few vestiges of the rainforests in Nigeria.

    The Gnalić shipwreck

The Gnalić shipwreck is a little over three nautical miles distant from Biograd na moru, Croatia, on the Dalmatian coast. Previous archaeological investigations exposed the remains of a large ship dating to the late 16th century. Artifacts excavated at the time include a rich assortment of items and materials including: glass vessels and mirrors, brass chandeliers, shaving razors, and candle snuffers. One of the most interesting and rare finds was a collection of spectacles packed in little wooden boxes. Determining the provenience and destination of all these items will shed light on the nature of commerce routes in the central Mediterranean world of the late 16th century. This audio-visual work was composed by Kotaro Yamafune, a Ph.D. student at Texas A&M University, as a part of primary results of Gnalic Project 2014 field season.

Virtual Dive on the Wreck of the Melckmeyt (1659)

The wreck at the centre of the project is a merchant ship named Melckmeyt (Milkmaid). It was discovered in 1992 by local divers Erlendur Guðmundsson and Sævar Árnason, close to a tiny isolated island called Flatey in Breiðafjörður, off the west coast of Iceland. Investigations at the site restarted in 2016, when a team of divers from the University of Iceland decided to carry out a more detailed survey. This team was led by Kevin Martin, a maritime archaeologist and PhD student in archaeology at the University of Iceland, with the assistance of maritime archaeologists from the Dutch Cultural Heritage Agency who are interested in the ship as it is believed to have been built in the Netherlands and represents one of the world’s most northerly historical Dutch shipwrecks. The team was able to apply the latest technological innovations to make a high-resolution 3D survey of the shipwreck and this data has been used as the basis of the virtual reality experience.
