Survey of COVID-19 Pandemic Impacts on National Education Planning Units

As the COVID-19 pandemic spreads across the globe, our statistical community is facing new challenges. During these trying times, when countries need data more urgently than ever before to plan and monitor emergency response efforts, and prepare for medium- and long-term mitigation and recovery strategies, statistical operations and other office activities are seriously disrupted or interrupted. Responses to the survey will allow the UIS and donor agencies to prepare for the disruption and to design assistance strategies, which will be benefit us all in the long term.

The survey was launched on 10 July 2020. Access the online survey here!

Survey on National Education Responses to COVID-19 School Closures

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Bank seeks to collect information on national education responses to school closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The questionnaire is designed for Ministry of Education officials at central or decentralized level in charge of school education. The questionnaire does not cover higher education or technical and vocational education and training. Analysis of results will allow for policy learning across the diversity of country settings in order to better inform local/national responses and prepare for the reopening of schools.

The survey will be run on a regular basis to ensure that the latest impact and responses are captured. In light of the current education crisis, the COVID-19 education response coordinated by UNESCO with our partners is deemed urgent.

The first round of data collection was completed in mid-June and a second round will be launched in early July 2020.

As nations contend with a planet-wide pandemic that threatens lives, livelihoods and ways of living, monitoring education data may not be on top of the priority list. However, if we are to avoid losing ground in learning equity and inclusion, the collection of essential data must continue. In these trying times, the UIS offers guidance to ministries of education, their agencies and statistical institutes on what data to collect and how to collect it. Please consult our fact sheet on The Need to Collect Essential Data During the COVID-19 Crisis for guidance on how essential data collection should and can continue to inform vital policy decisions on education delivery as well as support the health and well-being of learners – especially those in vulnerable populations.
