OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST

Under the overall authority of the UNESCO Regional Director for Southern Africa, and the direct supervision of the Senior Science Programme Specialist, the incumbent will be responsible for providing program support to ensure effective, planning, implementation and monitoring of the work of UNESCO’s Natural Science, mainly in the Basic Engineering Sciences and Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Policy. Support will be provided in the following key programmatic areas;

Long Description
  • Assist in the development of projects to be implemented in the Natural Science sector with a focus on programs related to Engineering, STI policies, Environment, Geosciences and Climate Change.
  • Working with the relevant stakeholder in coming up with the Needs and Numbers for Basic Engineering Sciences
  • Working on programmes to increase the uptake of STEM subjects in Southern Africa
  • Assist in training workshops and capacity building initiatives for STEM and STI.
  • Work on course development for STEM, STI and Geosciences for the UNESCO Open Learning Programs.
Long Description
  • Assist the Senior Programme Specialist Natural Sciences in developing proposals for funding  to donors
  • Follow up and assuring regular monitoring of proposals submitted for funding to donors
  • Facilitate the implementation of activities on Environment & Geosciences and Climate Change
  • Provide information for effective planning of national and regional workshops on Science Policy, as well as Engineering Sciences with strong emphasis on the Environment and Climate change.
  • Assist in implementation of the International Commemoration days such as the International Day for Women and Girls in Science, World Science Day.

  • Participate, support the planning, organization and implementation of workshops, seminars, conferences and meetings and other gatherings relevant to the work of the programme and sector.
  • Provide write/update on website articles for the sector.
  • Participate in other UN outreach activities and develop promotional materials including project brochures and other visibility materials related to the organization
  • Provide assistance to increasing the visibility of the programmes undertaken by the Natural Science sector
  • As may be requested, carry out any other assignments or tasks that are related to successful achievement of Natural Science sector.
