Le festival populaire surova dans la région de Pernik a lieu chaque année les 13 et 14 janvier pour célébrer le Nouvel An selon l’ancien calendrier. Le cœur de la célébration est un rituel de mascarade populaire qui a lieu dans les villages de la région. La première nuit, des groupes de mascarade survakari composés d’hommes, de femmes et d’enfants enfilant des masques et des costumes spécialement préparés convergent vers le centre du village où ils allument des feux et jouent avec le public. Certains participants endossent un rôle particulier, tel que celui de chef, de jeunes mariés, de prêtre et d’ours. Tôt le matin suivant, ils se réunissent et marchent dans le village en se rendant dans les maisons où ils marient rituellement les jeunes couples pendant que le rituel de l’ours présage une bonne santé. Leurs hôtes attendent leur arrivée avec le repas et les cadeaux habituels. Après le festival populaire, les groupes survakari distribuent les cadeaux, faisant souvent don des fonds récoltés aux orphelins et aux plus défavorisés. L’expérience de mascarade attire les jeunes et renforce leur estime de soi en tant que gardiens de la tradition. Des familles entières se consacrent à la collecte des matériaux pour les masques et les autres attributs tout au long de l’année, les adultes enseignant aux jeunes et aux enfants la confection des masques et des costumes.
