Director-General deplores the death of journalist Huner Rasool in Iraqi Kurdistan

24/08/2020

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has urged the Iraqi authorities to investigate the events that led to the death of journalist Huner Rasool in the town of Ranya on 12 August.

“I deplore the death of Huner Rasool,” said the Director-General. “I call on the authorities investigate events around this killing and ensure respect for media freedom and journalists’ right to carry out their work without fear of violence.”

Rasool, a journalist for Gali Kurdistan TV of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan Party, died from injuries sustained while covering clashes between security forces and protestors.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
