45th session (1996)

The forty-fifth session of the International Conference on Education took place in Geneva from 30 September to 5 October 1996 on the theme Strengthening of the role of teachers in a changing world.

The Conference was attended by 135 Member States of UNESCO, 2 associate Member States, 5 non-Member States, Palestine, 6 institutions of the United Nations System, 12 inter-governmental organizations, 31 international non-governmental organizations, and 2 foundations. In all, the forty-fifth session of the ICE brought together 899 participants, consisting of 748 delegates (among whom were 60 ministers and 24 vice-ministers of education) and 151 representatives and observers.

The Conference also took note of the Resolution adopted by the Committee of Experts on the International Standard Classification of Education. During the closing ceremony on 5 October, the participants celebrated International Teachers' Day and the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teacher.
