On 7 June 2019, UNESCO IITE contributed to the webinar hosted by the ICDE OER Advocacy Committee (OERAC). The online event was a follow-up to the Draft OER Recommendations consultations by the Intergovernmental Expert Meeting held at UNESCO Headquarters in May 2019 (the Recommendations will be submitted to the General Conference for review and adoption in November 2019).
Reflecting recent educational trends and taking into account the rapid technological changes, the draft Recommendations text sets out a transformative vision of Open Educational Resources (OER), which have potential to make a significant contribution to the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
The Draft OER Recommendations have five objectives: (1) Building capacity of stakeholders to create access, use, adapt and redistribute OER; (2) Developing supportive policy; (3) Encouraging inclusive and equitable quality OER; (4) Nurturing the creation of sustainability models for OER; and (5) Facilitating international cooperation.
Speakers at the webinar were ICDE Ambassadors for the global advocacy of OER and the UNESCO ICDE OER Chairs. In total, over 65 participants registered. During the webinar, the participants discussed the outcomes of the Intergovernmental Expert Meeting held at UNESCO Headquarters in May 2019 and the UNESCO OER recommendations.
At the webinar, Ms. Svetlana Knyazeva, Chief of the Unit of Digital Pedagogy and Learning Materials of UNESCO IITE, presented the outcomes of the recent global study “Understanding the Impact of OER: Achievements and Challenges” conducted by UNESCO IITE in order to critically review the growth of OER and its potential impact on education systems around the world.
