UNESCO celebrated African Child Day and the International Albinism Awareness Day

16/06/2020

On 16 June 2020, UNESCO organized in collaboration with the UN Independent Expert on the enjoyment of human rights by persons with albinism, a webinar on the occasion of the celebration of the Day of the African Child and to commemorate the International Albinism Awareness Day, usually held on 13 June, to raise awareness and increase UNESCO’s support to the implementation of the Regional Action Plan, endorsed by the Summit Heads of State of the African Union in February 2020.

The webinar was organized within the context of the implementation of the recommendations of the Biennale of Luanda and allowed for the members of the UNESCO family, the Secretariat at HQs, the Permanent Delegations, National Commissions and the field network in Africa to learn more about the human rights violations and atrocities performed against people with albinism in Africa. Testimonies given by children and youth from Tanzania on their tragic story allowed to provide a human element to the narrative. The event enabled also to exchange on best practices brought by activists on Albinism, the African Union Commission, the UN Independent Expert as well as UNESCO Field Offices experiences in Tanzania, Mozambique and Namibia. The main objective of the exchanges was to discuss on how best UNESCO can enhance advocacy efforts and contribute to the implementation of the African Regional Action Plan  at continental level for the protection and support of this particularly vulnerable group.  Specific recommendations were made pertaining actions by Education, Communication and Information as well as Culture and Social and Human Sciences actions aiming at being included in the development of the UNESCO medium term strategy, the C4, which is in the process of being formulated. In addition, an appeal was made to the Permanent Delegations and National Commissions for UNESCO to support the Development of actions on the ground, as well as supporting the ratification of the AUC Protocol for Disabilities.
