La batana es un barco pesquero tradicional, típico de la ciudad de Rovinj (Croacia). Elemento importante para la economía y el patrimonio cultural de esta localidad, la construcción de batanas transmitida en el seno de familias de artesanos fue mermando en proporciones alarmantes hasta 2004, debido a la producción industrial de embarcaciones. Ese año, un grupo de apasionados defensores locales de este tipo de barco crearon una asociación, la Casa de la Batana, para salvaguardar su construcción y las prácticas culturales inherentes a la misma (un dialecto local y cantos tradicionales). La asociación, que carece de fines de lucro, contó con la ayuda del municipio y la comunidad italiana de la ciudad, el apoyo del Museo del Patrimonio Cultural y el Centro de Investigaciones Históricas de Rovinj y la asistencia de un especialista en ecomuseología para crear el Ecomuseo de la Batana, cuyo objeto es dar a conocer este tipo de barco al público y ofrecer formaciones en técnicas y prácticas culturales inherentes a su construcción y uso. El ecomuseo cuenta ahora con una exposición sobre la construcción de la batana, su equipamiento pesquero y las diferentes clases de pesca practicadas. También lleva a cabo las siguientes actividades: organizar talleres sobre técnicas de construcción destinados a fabricantes de barcos; publicar documentación especializada; y organizar regatas, alentando a los jóvenes a participar en ellas. Además, el ecomuseo posee un astillero para construir y reparar batanas en el que tienen lugar visitas guiadas para el público en general. Por último, el ecomuseo lleva a cabo una labor de cooperación a nivel nacional e internacional, participando en festivales, regatas y mesas redondas con un doble objeto: poner de relieve la función desempeñada por la batana en las comunidades tradicionales de pescadores y marineros; y contribuir a la salvaguardia del patrimonio cultural marítimo.

Documentation and research: the ground floor of the 'House of Batana' hosting the documentation center. The interactive and multimedia permanent exhibition presents batana's tangible and intangible heritage. Regular research is conducted on various aspects of this heritage
Know-how: a shipbuilder and his assistant build a batana. During summer batanas are built and repaired on the 'Little Shipyard', one of the Ecomuseum's interpretative components presenting the process of batana's construction thus including it into today's way of life

Promotion of tradition: the traditional launch of a batana from the Rovinj's waterfront 'Little Pier' is watched by numerous citizens, visitors and members of the Ecomuseum
Living tradition: one of the oldest way of fishing with spear using batana boat and light is today still a part of everyday life, as well as many other traditions that are promoted through the Ecomuseum
Socializing: 'Spacio Matika', one of the few old preserved canteens of Rovinj integrated into the Ecomuseum, keeping vital the Ecomuseum’s concept of empowering local community who, after the batana ride, enjoy with their visitors in traditional singing, food and wine
Education and transmission: participants of the children's boatbuilding workshop at 'Little Pier' complete the construction of a little batana which earns them a special recognition. Besides workshops, other local traditions are also transmitted directly to the children in other ways
Viability: the Ecomuseum regularly organizes the international Rovinj regatta for traditional boats with vela al terzo (lugsail) and Latin sails of the upper Adriatic. The regatta is an opportunity to motivate and teach younger generations how to sail with batana
International cooperation and exchange of experience: batana 'Calsanta' and other boats at the 2008 Festival of Sea and Seamen in Brest. The Ecomuseum is very active in participating on international events thus broadening its network and fostering intercultural dialogue
