The elaboration of the "Inventories of the Representative list and list in need of urgent safeguarding of Intangible Heritage in Mongolia"

Resumen:

This project resulted in the drawing up of two inventories of intangible cultural heritage present in the territory of Mongolia. The project was conducted at the national level covering 85% of the country including 283 districts of 21 provinces and all 9 districts of Ulaanbaatar.
With the purpose of evaluating and analyzing the status of the current safeguarding system and to identify ICH elements on the territory of Mongolia, different forms for inventorying were elaborated so to establish a standard registration and information system at the national level, and a field survey based on them and on a predefined questionnaire was carried out nationwide by 115 cultural specialists, professionals and ICH bearers.
Elements of ICH were documented through audio recording and photography with the participation of communities, groups and relevant non-governmental organizations. Overall 80 elements were identified and registered and 3,339 individuals were identified as ICH bearers. 78% of ICH elements were inscribed on the National Representative List, 14% in the National List in Need of Urgent Safeguarding, while 8% was not registered. A catalogue including descriptions and photos of those elements in both lists was published. A national symposium on ‘The current issues for safeguarding ICH’ as well as a seminar on ‘The Establishment of the National Registration and Information System of ICH in Mongolia’ were also part of the project.
The project was implemented according to schedule and closed in May 2011.
