On the occasion of the International Literacy Day (8 September), the UNESCO Creative Cities of Literature jointly launched a social media campaign with the hashtag #InternationalLiteracyDay2020 and #UNESCOCitiesofLiterature. As the world continues to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cities of Literature redesigned their plans for the 2020 edition of International Literacy Day, in order to enable digital and simultaneous celebrations around the world.
The UNESCO Creative Cities of Design, which unites 40 cities worldwide, organized an open virtual debate under the theme ‘The power of design in response to the global crisis and rebooting the world’ on July 14, 2020.
The third edition of the UNESCO Creative Cities Beijing Summit will be held on 17 and 18 September 2020, under the theme ‘Creativity empowers cities, technology creates the future’.
Bucheon, a UNESCO Creative City of Literature in the Republic of Korea, is organizing the first Bucheon Diaspora Literary Award (BUDILIA). Illustrating the transformative power of literature, the theme of the award highlights the essence of literature in sublimation of historical moments, lived experiences and the process of identity formation. Through the award, the city ultimately seeks to uplift the spirits of residents and strengthen solidarity and collaboration, especially amidst the current pandemic.
For the upcoming International Journal of Crafts and Folk Arts, foreseen to be published in November 2020, Jinju (Republic of Korea), a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art, has launched a Call to collect academic and research papers, articles, and news items related to the theme.
Since 2019, Areguá is a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art in Paraguay. Known as one of the three key pottery cities of Paraguay, the city is also known for offering a great range of popular arts including music and dance notably.
Carrara, a UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art organized the fourth edition of White Carrara Downtown, a week-long festival that highlights the unique cultural capital of the city and its surroundings. Dedicated to white marble and its creative use, the event aims to enhance the cultural identity of Carrara through an urban museum itinerary punctuated by various experiences such as art installations and performances, exhibitions, theater and opera, and craft workshops open to the public.
The 18 UNESCO Creative Cities of Film have launched a collective and dedicated website to connect with each other within the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. The platform will allow cities to share with each other their ongoing work as well as strengthen and enhance international collaboration within the Network.
With the aim to build new synergies within the UNESCO Creative City film cluster, the city of Busan has launched its annual film production residency project. Given the restrictions administered due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s residency programme is only to creative cities from the Republic of Korea. In this context, Daegu, a UNESCO Creative City of Music, and Gwangju, a UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts, have been selected as exchange cities for this year’s edition.
Busan (Republic of Korea), a UNESCO Creative City of Film since 2014, organized the 2020 Busan Food Film Festa (BFFF), an event that highlighted the agglomeration of the film and gastronomic assets of the city. Launched in 2016, the festival aims to provide residents the opportunity to enjoy gastronomy and film as well as spread the values of sharing, comfort and hope, especially amidst the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
