On 12-13 of April 2010, a two-day workshop dedicated to the establishment of new partnership between the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and UNESCO IITE was held at the premises of IITE in Moscow.
Ms. Feodosia Gabysheva, the Minister of Education of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), attended the opening of the workshop. She delivered a speech about her ministry’s plans for modernization of education and particularly for support of teachers, working in circumpolar region. Mr. Dendev Badarch, the acting director of IITE, made a presentation on IITE strategy and priority areas. Workshop also was attended by representatives of various education institutions of Republic of Sakha, as well as IITE staff and representatives of education division of the Microsoft company in Russia.
At the workshop an agreement was reached between the Ministry of education of Republic of Sakha and UNESCO IITE on the development of the joint project “Teachers of the Arctic”, and the framework of the joint acitity was worked out.
The “Teachers of the Arctic” project will facilitate the achievement of EFA goals, in particular, bringing the benefits of education to “every citizen in every society”. The project will be carried out in the course of the Second International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People and United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
“Teacher of Arctic” project will be a flagship project which will contribute to the satisfaction of education needs of the people living in circumpolar regions through identification and realization of the model of up-to-date teacher in up-to-date educational environment, working under specific conditions of the Arctic.
The main tasks of the project are:
- to develop the competency model of a teacher, working in circumpolar region;
- to identify ICT instruments that a teacher needs to use, according to the competency model, and to implement them;
- to identify the capacity development needs of circumpolar teacher, and to implement an appropriate capacity development programme in the pilot region;
- to collect and disseminate such an experience into other regions.
