Percentage of persons in cultural employment

Definition

Number of persons who have a cultural or non-cultural occupation in cultural industries or who have a cultural occupation in a non cultural industry expressed as a percentage of total number of persons employed. Number of people employed in the cultural and creative sectors and holding a cultural occupation as a percentage of overall employment for the latest year.

Data source

The ideal data sources are the Labour Force survey, Census or special surveys dedicated to cultural employment. Some data can be gathered from Administrative sources, Business Registers, Income taxes, Household Income and Expenditure Surveys, Industrial, service, commercial and agriculture surveys and censuses, Living standard measurement surveys, and Private sources.

Calculation method

Divide the total number of persons employed in cultural occupations or cultural industries by the total number of persons employed, and multiply the results by 100

Data required

Number of persons employment by type of industries (cultural, non cultural), number of persons by type of occupation (cultural, non cultural), total number of employed population.

Interpretation

A higher value would indicate a greater role of culture as employer in an economy.

Limitations

Additional information such as the working conditions of the cultural workers such as information on decent work (enough income to cover basic needs) or the status of secondary job may be necessary to provide an accurate status of the cultural workers wellbeing.

Purpose

This indicator aims to assess the role of culture as an “employer” at the national level as well, as the vitality and dynamism of the culture sector and its potential in improving the material welfare of those employed in it.
