The fifth Category II Centre on Earth Sciences and disaster risk reduction, under auspices of UNESCO is established
On February 16, 2021, by signing the agreement between UNESCO and the Government of Iran, the Regional Education and Research Center on Earthquake Risk Management and Resilience for West and Central Asia at the International Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Seismology (IIEES) as the sixth Category II Centre of Iran, in natural sciences under auspices of UNESCO was established.
In the signing ceremony of the Centre, Dr. Mansour Gholami, Minister of Science, Research and Technology of Iran, thanked UNESCO for its continued cooperation with Iran and saying: “my country has always had good relations with UNESCO, and this event is an important moment for the continuation of cooperation in the field of science and technology and we hope to extent our joint cooperation in other areas as well”.
Speaking on behalf of UNESCO, Dr. Miguel Clusener-Godt, Director of Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences who virtually attended the meeting, stressed the crucial role UNESCO plays in building a global culture of resilience by supporting its member states in the implementation of these global agendas, operating at the interface between natural and social sciences, education, culture and communication and saying: “IIEES’s excellent and long experience and expertise to develop the specialized knowledge in this field can be an advantage for the further regional and international cooperation”.
The Category 2 Centres and Institutes contribute to the execution of UNESCO’s programme through capacity building; the exchange of information; research; and advanced training. These centres and institutes form a vast network of associated centres in the fields of water, renewable energy, science policy, biotechnology, geosciences, the basic sciences and remote sensing; and Islamic Republic of Iran hosts the fifth Category II Centre on Earth Sciences and disaster risk reduction, under auspices of UNESCO in the entire world.
