Element Lakalaka, dances and sung speeches of Tonga (Tonga)
Inscribed in 2008 (3.COM) on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (originally proclaimed in 2003)
Title EN: A blend of dances, recitations, songs and music, the Lakalaka involves up to several hundred people aligned in rows dancing in rapid and energetic movements. Practised by communities throughout the islands, it features themes related to Tongan history, legends, values and social structures.
Title FR: Mêlant chorégraphie, art oratoire, polyphonies vocale et instrumentale, le Lakalaka peut réunir plusieurs centaines de personnes. Les participants alignés exécutent des mouvements rapides et énergiques. Pratiqué dans tout l’archipel, le Lakalaka explore des thèmes puisés dans l’histoire, les légendes, les valeurs ou les structures sociales du Tonga.
Title ES: El lakalaka, mezcla de danzas, recitaciones, cantos y música, reúne a varios centenares de personas alineadas en hileras que ejecutan movimientos rápidos y enérgicos. Es practicado por comunidades de todo el archipiélago y representa temas pertenecientes a la historia, las leyendas, los valores y las estructuras sociales del Reino de Tonga.
