Element Samba de Roda of the Recôncavo of Bahia (Brazil)
Inscribed in 2008 (3.COM) on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (originally proclaimed in 2005)
Title EN: A blend of African and Portuguese cultures, the Samba de Roda is practiced in spontaneous settings, popular or religious festivities. Performers – generally women – assemble in a circle, the roda, each one taking her turn dancing to the accompaniment of singing and handclapping.
Title FR: Mêlant cultures africaine et portugaise, la Samba de Roda est dansée de façon spontanée lors de festivités populaires ou religieuses. Les participants, généralement des femmes, forment un cercle, la roda, dansant chacun son tour, au rythme des battements de mains et des chants.
Title ES: La samba de Roda, mezcla de influencias africanas y portuguesas, se practica de forma espontánea o en el curso de festividades populares o religiosas. Los bailarines, por lo general mujeres, forman un círculo, la “roda”, y bailan por turnos con acompañamiento de cánticos y palmas.
