With the support of UNESCO Montevideo, the 15th ABRAJI International Congress will take place on the 11th and 12th September of 2020 with free registration for all
The largest journalism meeting in Latin America will take place on the 11th and 12th September of 2020. The ABRAJI International Congress of Investigative Journalism was established in 2005. In 2019 the event counted on the participation of 1.200 people with numbers expected to rise for this year’s event.
UNESCO Montevideo will be revisiting its support for the forthecoming event, in particular the session titled “Virtual attacks against female journalists in Latin America” that will take place on 11th September at 20:30 hrs (time in Sao Paulo). Speakers including Sandra Chaher from the Asociación Civil Comunicación para la Igualdad in Argentina, Lina Cuellar from the Asociación Sentido in Colombia; Isabel Mercado, director of Pagina Siete Bolivia and Gabriela Buada Blondell, founder of Caleidoscopio Humano in Venezuela will come together to discuss the violence that women journalists suffer in their countries and possible solutions.
Lidia Brito, Regional Director of UNESCO's Office for Sciences in Latin America and the Caribbean said,
“we are always delighted to support and work in collaboration with ABRAJI to promote and defend freedom of expression and the safety of journalists in the region. This year we are especially committed to the panel on the session dedicated to the protection of women journalists. This session complements UNESCO’s broader efforts to address gender-specific threats both online and offline through research, capacity building and awareness-raising, within the framework of the UN Plan of Action for the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity”.
ABRAJI president Marcelo Träsel, underlined the importance of the congress as a space to reflect the current state of journalism, especially at a time of a pandemic, political crisis and inminent climate disaster:
“The 2020 congress was one of the most challenging to organise due to the transition of becoming a fully digital event and the number of pressing issues that needed to be addressed. Nevertheless, we are convinced that the planned activities will support Brazilian journalists in their work during this period of uncertainty. We are also excited about the possibility that the online congress will allow the participation of many more students and reporters from all over Brazil, and from other countries”.
