The Cusco Forum celebrates 50 years of the 1970 Convention with UNESCO
UNESCO, in cooperation with the Government of Peru, will organize the "Cusco Forum: Regional Technical Dialogue on the future of international cooperation in the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural property", on Thursday 1 October. The online event, in English and Spanish, will gather representatives of all 33 Member States from the Latin America and Caribbean region and experts with the aim of strengthening cooperation between countries on the current regimes and international practices in the fight against illicit trafficking in cultural property.
Presentations from police and legal experts will highlight the challenges the region faces and measures available at national and regional levels that benefit from coordination and exchange among countries impacted by looting and trafficking of cultural objects, whether they are source, transit or destination States. Participants will explore preventive measures including legal provisions, regulations for police, security and customs officials, and aspects of criminal behaviour including during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as recovery and restitution of cultural property.
The event is organized in the framework of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the UNESCO 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property.
After the Forum, the Peruvian Government will prepare a joint report as a contribution to the multilateral meetings to be held this year in commemoration to the anniversary of the UNESCO 1970 Convention.
