UNESCO Director-General calls for investigation into murder of journalist Aziz Memon in Pakistan

Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, today denounced the killing of journalist Aziz Memon who was found dead in the city of Mehrabpur, in Sindh province in southern Pakistan, on 16 February.

“I condemn the murder of Aziz Memon,” said the Director-General. “I trust the authorities will conduct a thorough investigation into the killing. Bringing the perpetrators of this crime to justice is essential to deter further attacks on the media.”

The dead body of Aziz Memon, a reporter for Kawish Television Network (KTN), was recovered from an irrigation canal. Mermon is reported to have received many threats in relation to his reporting and his body showed signs of strangulation.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
