Director-General condemns killing of journalist Abdullah Al Qadry in Yemen

18/04/2018

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, today condemned the killing of news photographer and camera operator Abdullah Al Qadry in Yemen on 13 April and called for measures to protect media workers in the country.

“I condemn the killing of Abdullah Al Qadry,” said the Director-General. “Journalists provide people with information that can prove absolutely vital in times of conflict and insecurity. It is the responsibility of all parties to a conflict to respect the civilian status of media workers and protect them in line with the Geneva Conventions.”

Al-Qadry had worked for Belquees TV and Agence France-Presse.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity-building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
