Director-General condemns attack that killed journalist Vadym Komarov in Ukraine

02/07/2019

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has called on the Ukrainian authorities to continue investigating the 4 May attack, which caused the death of journalist Vadym Komarov on 20 June.

“I condemn the brutal attack on Vadym Komarow,” said the Director-General. “I trust that the authorities will continue investigating this murder and bring its perpetrators to justice.”

Komarov, a citizen journalist who investigated local politics and corruption, was attacked by unknown assailants in broad daylight in the centre of the city of Cherkasy and spent the following weeks in a coma. One day before the attack, he had announced the planned publication of an article alleging corruption in sports schools.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
