Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, today condemned the killing of journalist Dennis Denora, urging the authorities make sure that this crime does not go unpunished.
“I condemn the murder of Dennis Denora,” said the Director-General. “It is essential for freedom of expression and press freedom, for democracy and rule of law, that the authorities ensure this crime does not go unpunished.”
Unknown assailants shot and killed Dennis Denora in his car on 7 June in Panabo City in the province of Davao del Norte in the Philippines, Dennis Denora was the publisher and editor of Trends and Times a local community weekly.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity-building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
