On 14 March last, Hedva Ser opened a new exhibition of artists from Art Camp entitled “Women Artists: Creative Energy for Peace”, which was held at UN Headquarters, New York. The inauguration ceremony took place in the presence of Ms Elisenda Vives Balmaña, Permanent Representative of Andorra to the United Nations, and Ms Saniye Gülser Corat, UNESCO Director for Gender Equality.

As patron of this new edition of Art Camp, Hedva Ser gathered artists from every continent, to highlight the power of culture and artistic expression for women’s empowerment. This exhibition was co-organized with UNESCO, the National Commission of Andorra for UNESCO and the Permanent Mission of the Principality of Andorra to the United Nations.

“Individuals, and particularly women, communities and nations worldwide hit by conflicts and wars throughout human history have always found in art an invaluable means of self-expression, reconciliation and dialogue. This healing power of art can and should also be put at the service of millions of women worldwide that struggle to fully enjoy their basic human rights, including the right to education and freedom of expression. Art can be a powerful means to achieve women’s leadership in many areas of work and life”, said Ms Corat, in her opening speech.

This exhibition was displayed in the framework of the 62nd session of the Commission on the Status of Women, which took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 12 to 23 March 2018. It focused more precisely on the challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls.

Ms Hedva Ser was appointed UNESCO Artist for Peace in October 2011. In January 2017, she was entrusted with the title of UNESCO Special Envoy for Cultural Diplomacy, in recognition of her commitment to the dialogue of cultures and social inclusion as a vehicle for a culture of peace.
