Amidst the COVID-19 crisis, Macao SAR (China), a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy since 2017, continues to strive for the promotion of its rich culinary heritage and techniques through education and innovation. Inscribed as Macao’s intangible cultural heritage since 2012, the Macanese gastronomy represents more than 400 years of food culture.
Macao SAR, designated as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2017, contributed to the worldwide celebration of Sustainable Gastronomy Day (18 June) by producing a special video displaying Macao’s unique gastronomic culture, recipes and culinary arts. The celebration is in line with the city’s endeavor to foster preservation of gastronomic culture and contribute to the sustainable development of Macao’s tourism industry, while progressing towards the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Östersund, a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, and the region of Jämtland Härjedalen in Sweden, will organize virtually the 4th edition of the Eat Art Festival from June 1st to 15th. The festival is a regional cross-cultural food event dedicated to sustainable food development in a cultural and creative context. It also marks the celebration of Östersund's 10 years of dedicated work as an UNESCO Creative City since 2010.
From 10 to 13 June 2019, Östersund, Sweden, celebrated the nordic artisan soul food through the Eat Art Festival. The event aimed at exploring new food experiences by combining cultural traditions and creativity while fostering more sustainable patterns within the food production. The 3-days festival included workshops, exhibitions and talks to raise awareness about linkages between gastronomy, culture and sustainable development among the general public.
The UNESCO Creative City of Rasht, Iran, launched in December the first edition of the Festival of Organic Products. This year’s theme is "From Farm to Table" and aims at fostering healthy lifestyles and well-being fostering through creativity and gastronomy.
From 11 to 17 November 2019, the Creative City of Gastronomy of Rasht hosts the Pumpkin Festival, an iconic event to explore the culinary traditions of the city through…pumpkins! The festival, organized by the municipality of Rasht and its Cultural, Social and Sports Organization, showcases several types of pumpkin from different countries around the world, as well as local gastronomic products which use pumpkin as the main ingredient, as in the case of several Iranian traditional dishes.
The Brazilian Creative City of Florianópolis mobilized its citizens to celebrate World Sustainable Day throughout the week of 18 to 21 June 2019. The event was attended by more than 2000 people and involved different stakeholders, who joined forces to raise awareness on culture and sustainable gastronomy under the aegis of the educational institutions that are part of the management group of Florianópolis’ membership to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
18 June now marks World Sustainable Gastronomy Day, which acknowledges gastronomy as a cultural expression linked to the natural and cultural diversity of the world. This gives countries and cities around the world an opportunity to celebrate gastronomy as a key lever for sustainable development through agricultural development, food security, nutrition, responsible food production and conservation of biodiversity.
From 19 to 21 January, Macao has organized the 2019 International Gastronomy Forum. For three years, the UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy is focusing on the objectives of the Creative Cities Programme and conducting discussions around the potential of gastronomy and the many creative possibilities it generates.
On 2 and 3 November, Bergen UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy will host the World Cheese Awards. The event will boost the interest for artisan cheese production and know-how. More than 3,500 cheeses will be judged by 230 international experts. A conference dedicated to entrepreneurs and a food festival open to the general public will also held. Several UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy will participate in this event and bring locally produced cheeses to the competition.
