The first Meeting of the Global Steering Committee of the International Coalition of Cities against Racism (ICCAR) will be organised by UNESCO (in charge of the ICCAR Secretariat) and hosted by the Municipality of Bologna in Italy, lead city of the European Coalition of Cities against Racism (ECCAR), from 17 to 18 April 2016.

More than a decade after ICCAR was launched by UNESCO in 2004, the call for a united common front in combating discrimination has never been more relevant.

In order to foster increased international collaboration across the Coalition and strengthen the collective identity of ICCAR, the proposal was made by mayors and city officials at UNESCO Headquarters in March 2015 to establish a Global Steering Committee for ICCAR.

In today’s interconnected and mobile world, cities are key to the global challenges of tackling discrimination, promoting diversity, and inclusion and respect for human rights. Through the exchange of competences and expertise and by collaborating on shared initiatives through global platforms such as ICCAR, cities can harness the potential of international cooperation to support action that is effective in combating discrimination and promoting inclusive societies at the local level.
