One Step Closer to Multisectoral Public Policy on Youth in Algeria

On February 16, the launch of a unique national study on the frameworks and programs linked to public multisectoral youth policy in Algeria took place in Algiers - an initiative of NET-MED Youth Algeria and the UNESCO Office in Rabat, in partnership with the Algerian Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Chaired by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS) and the Institutional focal point for the implementation of the program in Algeria, the event brought together senior executives and directors from the MYS as well as other representatives of ministerial departments working with youth, including education, communication, vocational training and the National Statistics Office (NSO).

The aim of the meeting was to officially launch the study of a multisectoral youth public policy in Algeria, led by Mohamed Saib Musette, sociologist and research director at UNESCO, known for his work in the field of youth and the development of national public policies on employment and immigration.

This event helped expose the methodology of the study and target the sources of necessary data collection. A multisectoral approach will be taken to enable collective reflection, which will result in the development of a collective document based on the participation of all government sectors involved in youth.

Representatives of the different sectors will contribute to the collection of data on existing programs and institutions, practices and experiences and the facilitation of the consultation process with youth organizations. Finally, the NSO will provide statistics on the youth population and all studies relating to youth development.

Jose Luis Santamaria, who is in charge of the monitoring of the NET-MED Youth project at the European Union headquarters in Brussels, met representatives from Algerian youth organizations who have participated in NET-MED Youth events. This meeting allowed them to present their plans, themes they would like to tackle, challenges faced and opportunities that such a network provides.

Following the launch, national stakeholders, UNESCO representatives and Jose Luis Santamaria have together established the preliminary steps towards sustainable action and a multisectoral committee on youth.
