Building peace in the minds of men and women

Sport and Anti-doping

Sports are a recognized instrument for development and peace, as it disregards both geographical borders and social differences. It promotes social inclusion and economic development in different geographical, cultural and political contexts.

UNESCO, as the United Nations’ lead agency for physical education and sport, promotes the educational, cultural and social dimensions of sport and physical education. The organization provides assistance, advisory services and guidance to the Member States wishing to elaborate or strengthen their sports policies.

The fight against doping in sport is based on two fundamental principles: the protection of the physical and mental health of athletes, both amateurs and professionals, and the preservation of sport ethics and values. UNESCO is actively involved in the anti-doping fight through its normative work, notably the International Convention against Doping in Sport, as well as through international cooperation, preventive education and capacity building.
