Director-General condemns murder of journalist Sunil Tiwari in India’s state of Madhya Pradesh

03/08/2020

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has denounced the killing of freelance print journalist Sunil Tiwari in central India.

I condemn the murder of Sunil Tiwari. Violence against the media is an intolerable attack on press freedom, a common good authorities everywhere need to uphold.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General

Some two months before his murder by unidentified assailants on 22 July, Tiwari, a contributor to newspaper Nai Duniya, published a video on social media in which he claimed to have received threats in connection with his reporting.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
