Director-General calls for the murderers of journalist Elias Mia in Bangladesh to be brought to trial

22/10/2020

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has condemned the killing of print journalist Elias Mia in the municipality of Bandar in Bangladesh on 12 October.

I condemn the murder of Elias Mia. As it impedes the free flow of information and limits the diversity of opinion and information, violence against journalists weakens public debate and democracy. It is therefore vital that those responsible for this crime be brought to justice.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General

Elias Mia, a reporter for the Dainik Bijoy daily newspaper, was fatally stabbed on 12 October while returning to his home in Bandar.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
