Around the world the IOC has helped to design a number of programmes to help communities to be better prepared and protected against the threat posed by tsunamis. For example, in 2018, more than 640,000 participants from all the CARIBE EWS Member States took part in the annual tsunami exercise, CARIBE WAVE.

The IOC is also helping to support training and capacity development to help strengthen tsunami preparedness within Member States. On 27 February 2010 an 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of central Chile, causing a tsunami that killed 525 people and caused USD 30 billion worth of damage. Following this disaster the IOC helped to strengthen Chile’s National Tsunami Warning System by supporting the development a new operations centre where staff can now train on a daily basis and constantly simulate possible events in order to improve tsunami warning times.
