Decision of the Intergovernmental Committee: 12.COM 16

The Committee,

  1. Having examined document ITH/17/12.COM/16,
  2. Recalling Decision 11.COM 7 and the ongoing and foreseen actions taken by the governing bodies of the Convention to assess, improve and streamline their working methods,
  3. Recalling also Resolution 38C/101 and welcoming the adoption by the UNESCO General Conference at its 39th session of the recommendations of the Open-Ended Working Group on the Governance, Procedures and Methods of Work of the Governing Bodies of UNESCO,
  4. Takes note of the efforts and steps already undertaken with a view to improving and streamlining the working methods of the governing organs of the 2003 Convention, in line with the Recommendations by the External Auditor and the IOS on this matter;
  5. Takes further note of the recommendation and good practice regarding the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage identified by the Open-Ended Working Group on the Governance, Procedures and Working Methods of the Governing Bodies of UNESCO;
  6. Invites the Secretariat to implement relevant recommendations of the Open-Ended Working Group on the Governance, Procedures and Working Methods of the Governing Bodies of UNESCO;
  7. Further invites the Bureau to conduct its work in accordance with the guiding principles and responsibilities of representatives of Electoral Groups in Bureaus, annexed as Appendix 2 in the recommendations of the Open-Ended Working Group on the Governance, Procedures and Working Methods of the Governing Bodies of UNESCO, adopted at the 39th session of the General Conference;
  8. Invites also the open-ended informal ad hoc working group to take up relevant recommendations of the Open-Ended Working Group on the Governance, Procedures and Working Methods of the Governing Bodies of UNESCO that may require further discussion before appropriate implementation, such as on the role of the Bureau;
  9. Decides to inscribe an item on its agenda on ‘Follow-up on implementation of the relevant recommendations of the Open-Ended Working Group on the Governance, Procedures and Working Methods of the Governing Bodies of UNESCO’ at its thirteenth session in 2018.
