In the framework of the UN 2009 International Year of Astronomy, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) is hosting a symposium on "The Role of Astronomy in Society and Culture". The aim of this Symposium is to provide a global, and at the same time detailed, view of the very many activities that link astronomy to our diverse cultures. It will also be a forum to discuss the ways these activities can be improved upon, from the local to the international levels.

The conference will bring together major actors who ensure that astronomy is present at all levels in education, society and culture worldwide. Broad themes to be covered include astronomy in culture and the culture of astronomy; astronomy and society; and education in astronomy across the planet. An art exhibition will also take place.

The proceedings of the Symposium will be edited by David Valls-Gabaud and Alec Boksenberg, and published by Cambridge University Press in the series of IAU Symposia.
