INEE

An international network for education in emergencies

The International Network for Education in Emergencies is an open global network of individuals and representatives from NGOs, UN agencies, donor agencies, governments, academic institutions, schools and affected populations, working together to ensure all persons the right to quality, relevant and safe education in emergencies and post-crisis recovery.

IIEP has played a pivotal role in the development of the Inter-Agency Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE) and its formation of internationally recognized standards, which are now leading the way in coordinating quality education interventions prior to, during, and after emergencies. IIEP supported the development of the INEE Minimum Standards, which are integral to IIEP’s training courses on education in emergencies and reconstruction.

IIEP is a founding member of INEE Working Group on Education and Fragility. The Working Group includes representatives from donor agencies, academics, UN agencies and practitioners. It coordinates diverse initiatives and catalyzes collaborative action on issues related to education and fragility.

IIEP is also member of the INEE Education Cannot Wait Advocacy Working Group which aims to ensure that education in emergencies is:

  • Prioritized by donors and receives increased funding;
  • Protected and that national governments, development partners, militaries and armed groups treat learning environments as safe spaces and protect schools, universities, students and educators from attack
  • Planned for and that all education sector policies and plans in priority countries are crisis-sensitive

In collaboration with INEE, IIEP has published several publications on education’s role in either mitigated or exacerbating fragility, in Afghanistan, Liberia, Cambodia and Bosnia Herzegovina.
