UNESCO prepares its fifth Global Report on Adult Learning and Education (GRALE) with a focus on citizenship education

The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) has begun preparations for the fifth Global Report on Adult Learning and Education (GRALE 5) to be published in 2022. On 12 May, the editorial meeting will take place virtually to prepare for data collection and processing on adult learning and education (ALE) in UNESCO Member States. It will also specify the thematic focus of the report; this year citizenship education. The report will combine survey data, policy analysis and case studies to provide policy-makers, researchers and practitioners an up-to-date picture of the status of ALE in UNESCO Member States, together with a review of citizenship education, including global citizenship education. It will provide recommendations for strengthening developments in ALE and for promoting active and global citizenship. GRALE 5 will be launched at the seventh International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VII) in Morocco in 2022.

Since 2009, every three years, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) produces the Global Report on Adult Learning and Education (GRALE). This Global Report is meant to monitor the decisions made by UNESCO Member States at the sixth International Conference on Adult Education (COFINTEA VI) which are included in the Belém Framework for Action (BFA). Furthermore, GRALE is also the instrument for monitoring the 2015 Recommendation of Adult Learning and Education (RALE). In addition to providing insights on the development of adult education and learning in the world, each issue of the Report offers evidence on how ALE can help countries achieve sustainable development.
