Most recently, UNESCO invited ASPnet members in all European Union (EU) countries to participate in a new joint project with the European Union. The project aims to strengthen the connections between heritage, youth and education in Europe. Initiated in the context of the European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH2018), students aged 11-18 years are encouraged to explore their cultural heritage and actively participate in its safeguarding and transmission in new and innovative ways.

Until July 2020, UNESCO's Living Heritage Entity and Unit for ASPnet will collaborate with ASPnet members on a series of activities to foster learning about and through intangible cultural heritage in schools. As a first step, schools shared through a survey experiences with integrating intangible cultural heritage ("living heritage") in their regular or extracurricular programmes. A selected number of teachers and students will participate in a workshop to start the piloting of innovative projects of learning with and through living heritage across different subjects such as history, mathematics, physics, chemistry etc.

Based on the survey results and the pilot, UNESCO will develop guidance materials for schools on how to integrate living heritage in school-based learning.
