This workshop will explore and design pilot projects for income generation to improve local communities' livelihoods and promote local sustainable development. The project will target communities living within and around Okavango Delta (Botswana), Mapungubwe (South Africa) and the Namib Desert (Namibia) heritage sites. The workshop will engage a bottom-up planning approach whereby representatives of the local people will have the opportunity to express their needs at the workshop.

The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) has started a new cooperation agreement with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). SIDA is supporting the workshop that the AWHF has prepared with Botswana National Museum, South African National Parks, Namibia National Museum, Khanya-African Institute for Community-Driven Development (South Africa) and Cultural Heritage without Borders (Sweden) on the topic Heritage Sites and Sustainable Tourism.
