Busan's World Cinema Landmark Project

Busan's World Cinema Landmark Project

When:
Tue, 09/01/2020 to Sun, 01/31/2021

Busan (Republic of Korea), a UNESCO Creative City of Film since 2014, has undertaken various development projects to support its creative sector.

Recently, in September, the city initiated the construction of the World Cinema Landmark Project. Through the creation of the Busan Cinema Center (BCC), the city intends to place the cultural landmark as the centre stage for the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), which has become a global tourist attraction.

The construction is foreseen to be undertaken in two stages: construction of the cinema street around the BCC as well as placement of emblematic monument including memorial colonnades of Korean cinema and interactive artworks, among others. The second stage entails the creation of a convergence cultural complex to host a film library and a wide range of exhibitions and performances.

The project also aims to open a ‘Cinema Streaming Zone’ enabling inhabitants to watch films from the BIFF’s archives on private devices.

This innovative and holistic project seeks to contribute to Busan’s tourism industry and to increase its international outreach as a UNESCO Creative City of Film.
