Coordinating and monitoring SDG4–Education 2030 Agenda

The international community entrusted UNESCO to coordinate the monitoring and implementation of SDG4; i.e the Education component of the international 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. As such, UNESCO Beirut supports the regional commitment to the new global development agenda.

In coordination with Regional partners, UNESCO Beirut led the articulation of regional educational issues and challenges, as well as priorities for post-EFA agenda, which led to the development of the Education 2030 Framework for Action (FFA) in 2015. In order to provide a coherent, cooridnated support to countries in the region, UNESCO Beirut established the Arab regional Support Group in 2016, comprising 21 organizations (UN/multilateral, Regional Organizations, Civil Society Organizations and Member States representatives at the SDG4-Education 2030 Global Steering Committee). UNESCO Beirut leads this group to mobilize commitment for the new education agenda through the implementation of Arab Regional SDG4 Roadmaps, adopted every two years during the Arab Regional Meetings on Education 2030 (AR-MED).

Two AR-MED meetings were organized in December 2015 and in March 2017, which resulted in the adoption of the Cairo Roadmap (2016) and Dubai Roadmap (2017/18), which guide the implementation of national and partners’ commitments in a coordinated, coherent and transparent manner.
