8 steps for patronage

Step 1:

Ensure that you are requesting patronage for an activity, event or work that is eligible for patronage, and that it is for a fixed period of time

Step 2:

Consult the National Commission for UNESCO and the national authority in charge of the use of the Convention emblem in whose territory the activity will take place

Consult the name and contacts of the national authority in charge of managing the use of the emblem

The first step for any organization seeking the use of the Convention emblem for patronage is to contact the National Commission for UNESCO and national authority in charge of managing the use of the Convention emblem in the country in which the organization is registered. The national authority will in some cases be the National Commission, so only a single consultation is required. The National Commission and national authority will advise on

  • the general acceptability of the request and whether another National Commission or national authority may need to be contacted (for activities taking place in different countries)
  • whether a request for patronage should be presented to the UNESCO Secretariat.

Step 3:

Complete required information

All requests must be submitted to the Director-General at least three months before the starting date of the activity and accompanied by a Patronage Request Form (inglés|francés).

Step 4:

For an activity at the national level, secure the endorsement of the Patronage Request Form by the National Commission for UNESCO and the national authority in charge of managing the use of the emblem of the 2003 Convention

For any national activity, your patronage request must have the endorsement of the National Commission (for the UNESCO emblem) and the national authority (for the 2003 Convention emblem). After completing the request form, please send your information to the National Commission for UNESCO in your country and national authority in charge of managing the use of the 2003 Convention logo for formal endorsement. Regional or international events do not always require endorsement of these national bodies, but you may wish to secure them if you have any doubt.

Step 5:

Forward request to UNESCO Secretariat

The completed request form and the endorsements from the National Commission and national authority can be sent either directly by the requesting body or by/through the National Commission or the relevant national authority.

Please note that complete requests should be addressed to the Director-General of UNESCO at least three months before the starting date of the activity. All requests must be sent by formal correspondence to the following address:
Office of the Director-General
UNESCO
7, place de Fontenoy
F-75352 Paris 07 SP
France

Please note that the completed request form must be accompanied by the activity-related layouts and examples of all printed or audiovisual promotional materials (cinematographic works, books, banners, posters, invitations, etc.) that are expected to bear the emblem of the Convention.

Step 6:

Receive notification from UNESCO

If patronage is granted, the responsible body will receive an official letter from the UNESCO Secretariat, which sets out the general conditions for the use of the 2003 Convention emblem.

If a request is declined, the responsible body will receive a letter from the UNESCO Secretariat explaining the reasons why the request has not been accepted.

In both cases, the UNESCO Secretariat will also inform the designated national authorities.

Step 7:

Obtain electronic files of the 2003 Convention logo

If patronage is granted, the responsible body will be asked to contact ICH-emblem to obtain the appropriate electronic file with the emblem of the 2003 Convention.

Step 8:

Report to UNESCO

The objective for granting the use of 2003 Convention emblem under patronage is to extend the outreach and impact of the Convention.

At the end of your activity, the responsible body must send a report to UNESCO evaluating the visibility, outreach and impact that your activity has achieved (See Patronage Reporting Form (inglés|francés)). This report should be accompanied by examples of materials and documents that you have produced bearing the logo of the 2003 Convention.

The report should be sent to:
Intangible Cultural Heritage Section,
UNESCO
7, place de Fontenoy
75352 Paris 07 France
Tel: +33 (0)1 45 68 43 95
Fax: +33 (0)1 45 68 57 52
E-mail: ICH-emblem@unesco.org

A copy of the report should also be sent to the National Commission for UNESCO and the national authority in charge of managing the use of the emblem that provided endorsements for your request.
