La oferta de servicios y hospitalidad durante la peregrinación del Arbain es una práctica social ejercida en las regiones del centro y el sur del Iraq donde convergen las procesiones de peregrinos y visitantes que se dirigen a la ciudad santa de Karbala. Profundamente arraigada en la tradición árabe e iraquí de la hospitalidad y llevada a cabo gracias al voluntariado y la movilización social, esta práctica se considera un elemento del patrimonio cultural vivo determinante de la identidad cultural del país. Todos los años, hacia el vigésimo día del mes musulmán de Safar, la provincia iraquí de Karbala acoge a millones de visitantes que participan en una de las peregrinaciones del mundo a las que acude un mayor número de fieles. Llegados de todas las regiones de Iraq y de países extranjeros, los peregrinos van a pie al Santuario del Imán Hussein. Muchas personas ofrecen sus disponibilidades de tiempo y de recursos para dispensarles servicios gratuitos durante su recorrido. Por lo menos dos semanas antes de la peregrinación del Arbain, diferentes asociaciones montan instalaciones temporales o reabren estructuras fijas a lo largo del itinerario seguido por los peregrinos para que éstos puedan disfrutar del uso de lugares donde puedan orar, albergarse y obtener diversos servicios. Son muy numerosas las personas que por la noche albergan gratuitamente a los caminantes en sus casas. Entre los depositarios y practicantes de este elemento del patrimonio cultural figuran las personas que preparan comidas, las familias que ofrecen hospitalidad, las autoridades que administran los dos santuarios de Karbala, los guías y los equipos médicos voluntarios, y también los donantes que aportan contribuciones generosas.

A group of chefs and wealthy donors of money while cooking many kinds of food that are provided to the visitors of Imam Hussein throughout the period of the visitation
A group of volunteers from the local governments and non-governmental organizations, school pupils and university students, etc. while they are doing massage in one of the rest processions to those visitors who come to Karbala from far-off provinces walking on foot
One of the mobile medical centers which is specialized in treating the states of emergencies and providing medical supplies for the female visitors throughout the period of the visitation
The guest house related to the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussein distributes three meals of food and drinks every day and throughout the period of the Visitation
